Group tracks

Ungroup tracks

Select the group’s header and press ⇧⌘G (Ungroup Track). The tracks move up one level and the header disappears.

Move tracks in and out of a group

Drag a track onto a group’s header to add it, or out of the group to remove it. Or select the track, run Command Palette → Add Track to Group… and pick the group.

Give a track its group’s color

Right-click a track inside a group and choose Color → Inherit. The track takes the group’s color.

Good to know

  • A group track is a sub-mix bus. All child tracks route their audio through it, so its volume, pan, Mix Controls and effects work on the summed signal.
  • Groups show in the sidebar, not on the timeline. Only the child tracks show clips. Select the group in the sidebar to reach its Inspector and effects chain.
  • Groups nest with no depth limit. Grouping tracks that already share a group nests the new group inside it.
  • Balance the children from the group’s Inspector. Its Group Mix section has a fader per child: Group Mix and Master Mix.
  • Output buses and automation tracks can’t go into a group.
  • A new group is named Group, with the tracks listed beneath it, and its header is selected.
  • You can also click the chevron on a group’s header to fold it. On a track inside a group, ← jumps to the group’s header.
  • Group header rows carry M and S, which mute or solo the whole group.
  • Inherit appears in the Color menu only when every track you color is in a group.
  • Add Track to Group… lists the project’s groups with a checkmark on the current one. With no group in the project it says No Groups Available.
