File into collections, tag and favorite

Drag samples onto a collection in the sidebar to file them. Add tags in the inspector. Press ⌘D to favorite the selected sample and move to the next row.

Rename a sample or pattern

File suggested samples

In Unsorted, select a sample and click File beside Sounds like in the inspector. Or click File N Suggestions in the toolbar to file all of them at once.

Add suggested samples to a collection

Open a collection. Under its list, Suggested Samples shows unsorted samples that sound like it. Click one to hear it, + to add it, x to turn it down.

Move samples to the Trash

Select rows and press ⌫. To restore, open Trash in the sidebar and click Put Back.

Remove a tag

Click the x on a tag’s row in the inspector. To remove a tag from every sample, open Filter by Tag in the toolbar and choose Manage Tags…, its first item.

Good to know

  • A collection is a hand-made list, such as “Kicks that work” or “Album: Nightdrive”. A sample is in at most one. The collection’s color shows on everything in it, and a sample in no collection has no color.
  • Tags cut across collections and stack. They come from what you type, what Gridshift reads off the file name, and, with Smart Search on, what a sample sounds like.
  • ⌫ asks nothing. Library hygiene means removing hundreds of samples, and a dialog per sample stops that. A sample waits 30 days with its file, favorite, tags and collection, and Put Back restores all of it.
  • Empty Trash… cannot be undone. It sits in the context menu of Trash in the sidebar and empties samples, patterns and presets in one step. Files in your Gridshift library are deleted; files in your own folders are left where they are.
  • Renaming changes only the library’s name. The file keeps its name, and Gridshift still reads tempo, key and root note from it. Clear the field to go back to the file’s name.
  • Collections hold samples or patterns, never both, and they sync. Presets have their own collections: Instrument Presets, Effect Presets.
  • Import folder names are not tags. The inspector lists them under Imported From, and search finds a sample by them, but the tag filter never shows them.
  • Manage Tags… lists folder names in their own section, and sound tags with Sound as their origin. Removing a tag leaves the samples; only the name goes.
  • One favorite mark, ⌘D, in the window and the picker alike. Favorites lead the picker’s results.
  • A new name shows everywhere in the list, inspector, ⌥S and ⌥P pickers, and on a dragged clip. Search finds the row by both names.
  • A suggestion needs five agreeing neighbors. Sounds like appears when the five filed samples that sound most like it are all in one collection. Collections with fewer than five samples never suggest. Suggestions need Smart Search.
  • File N Suggestions asks first. You can move any of them again afterwards.
  • Suggested Samples lists the closest first, six at a time. Refresh shows the next six, the bin moves one to the Trash, and the chevron folds the list away. Add All Suggested Samples… in the command palette adds them all, after asking.
  • A turned-down suggestion stays turned down. That sample is never suggested for that collection again, in the list or in the inspector, on any device.
  • One Trash for samples, patterns and presets. Presets are listed in their own group under the samples and patterns, and the badge counts all of them. It is the same Trash on every device.
  • In the Trash, the inspector offers Put Back and Delete Immediately… Delete Immediately… on a trashed row, or ⌫ with trashed rows selected, deletes those for good.
  • Empty Trash… and Delete Immediately… ask first, the only steps in the library that do. For presets they remove the preset files and previews from every Mac that syncs them.
  • Sync follows the file, not its location. Favorite a sample on one Mac and it is a favorite on every Mac with the same file. What syncs: iCloud.
