Convert audio to MIDI

Good to know

  • The original audio clip stays unchanged.
  • It is polyphonic. Chords, melodies and several instruments at once. Sustained and plucked single-instrument parts work best: piano, electric piano, synth lead, bass, voice.
  • Starts are far more accurate than ends. Expect to correct the note lengths in the piano roll.
  • Strummed chords are a known limit. Notes that start within a few milliseconds of each other can be merged or misplaced, and the first note of a strum is the least reliable.
  • Under Punchy, notes land where the hits are in the original audio, before warping. Smooth and Pitch warps are followed (Time Stretching).
  • Velocity is predicted, not measured from the peak. It tracks how hard each note was played, not the level of the recording.
  • The model is Gridshift’s own and runs on your Mac; no audio is uploaded.
  • Convert Audio to MIDI… is in the Command Palette’s Audio Tools group. With no clip selected it reads No Audio Clip Selected, with a MIDI clip Audio Clip Required.
Next: Piano Roll to clean up the detected notes.
