Good to know

  • Use it as a lead-in before a snare hit, a vocal phrase, a drop or a transition.
  • The original clip is never changed. The swell is rendered offline from the clip as you hear it, reversed, and placed on a new track so its peak lands exactly on the clip’s first hit. A trimmed clip or a single slice swells into its own hit; a warped or pitched clip is rendered as it plays.
  • The new track sits directly above the clip’s track, named after the clip with a ⟵ in front, and holds the swell, selected.
  • ⌘Z removes it in one step (Undo Reverse Reverb). After a multi-clip run, one ⌘Z removes all the swells.
  • The rise length follows the reverb. The built-in reverb gives a two-second rise. Through a plugin the swell is as long as the reverb’s tail, up to ten seconds per effect: a long hall gives a long rise, a short room a short one.
  • The swell fades out over 0.2 s after its peak, so its wet rest blends into the clip.
  • Reverse Reverb… is in the Audio Tools group. With no audio clip to work on, the palette shows No Audio Clip Selected instead of the list.
  • To shape the reverb first, dial it in on a return track, then pick that return track.
  • Bypassed effects on a return track are skipped. A return track without an active effect reads No active effects and cannot be picked.
  • A missing plugin is marked (not installed). Picking it, or any effect that fails to load, shows an error instead of rendering without it.
  • An effect at 0 % wet adds no reverb, so Gridshift names it and renders nothing.
  • Rack presets are not offered. Their parallel chains cannot be rendered as a single swell.
  • With no clip selected, every audio clip on the selected tracks is used. Muted clips are left out. ⌘A is Select All Clips in Track.
  • A multi-clip run shows a progress sheet that counts the clips as they render (“Clip 3 of 16”). Each source track gets one new track above it, named ⟵ and the track’s name, with all of that track’s swells on it, and the new swells are selected.
  • Close clips still each get a full peak. A swell starts where the one before it ends, so every swell peaks on its own hit.
  • Some clips get no swell: one with no room before it, such as a clip at the very start of the song, or a silent one. A banner says how many clips were skipped.
  • A long run through a plugin chain can take a few seconds. You can stop it at any time.
