Change the track height

Zoom into a clip

Zoom in time

With nothing selected, press ⌥→ to zoom in and ⌥← to zoom out. Or hold ⌥ and scroll, which zooms around the pointer.

Fit the selection or the whole song

Press ⌥1 (Zoom to Selection) to fit the selected clips or the marked range, and ⌥2 (Zoom to Project) to fit the whole song.

Move the cursor from the keyboard

Press → / ← to move the edit cursor one grid step and ↑ / ↓ to move it to the track above or below. Fn← / Fn→ (Home / End) move it four grid steps.

Good to know

  • ⌥↓ and ⌥↑ walk one ladder, a rung per press: Compact rows → Normal rows → Focus Mode → the focused MIDI clip’s piano roll at full window height. Normal is the default.
  • Track height has fixed sizes instead of a free zoom, so you never adjust heights to see what you need.
  • With clips selected or a range marked, ⌥→ and ⌥← move them a fine step instead of zooming. Escape lets go of the selection and gives the keys back to zoom and the cursor.
  • The grid follows the zoom. Zoom in and the grid lines, and so the arrow-key steps, get finer.
  • To jump between song parts, use locators. Where the cursor and playhead differ: Cursor, Playhead and Loop.
  • Sample and automation clips stop one rung short of the piano roll. Their editor is a fixed shallow band, so there is no extra height to reveal.
  • ⌥↓ is Enter Focus Mode and ⌥↑ is Exit Focus Mode in the Command Palette, whichever rung you are on.
  • With content marked, Fn← / Fn→ move it a bar instead of moving the cursor (Big Step Left / Big Step Right).
  • Scroll moves the timeline sideways; ⇧-scroll moves it up and down.
  • Hold ⌥ and drag vertically to zoom, with the point under the pointer held still. Drag horizontally to scroll.
  • ⌥1 with nothing selected does nothing. Select clips or mark a range first.
