Reverse a sample

Play it forwards again

Use the same sound both ways

Good to know

  • Reverse belongs to the track’s sample, not to one clip. Every clip on the track plays backwards, so a sound in both directions needs two tracks.
  • Each clip plays the same part of the sample as before, from the other end. Clips stay where they are in the song.
  • Picking another sample with ⌥S keeps Reverse on. The new sound plays backwards too. The list still previews it forwards.
  • The original file is never changed. Gridshift plays a reversed copy and saves it with the project.
  • Settings carry over: Warp, pitch, Normalize and Trim Silence apply to the reversed sound. Slice markers you placed by hand are mirrored.
  • Reverse works on sample tracks only, not on a track playing the built-in sampler.
  • A sample with stems is reversed as you hear it, muted stems left out, and loses its stem lanes. Turning Reverse off brings back that mix, not the lanes.
  • Detected slice markers are found again on the reversed sound, so slices start on the reversed attacks.
  • Per-slice levels reset, as when you pick another sample.
Next: Reverse Reverb builds a swell that rises into a sound.
