# No Sound

> Nothing plays, or one track stays silent. Check the monitor profile's output first, then mute and solo, then whether the track has a loaded instrument.

## Check where Gridshift sends the sound

Press `⌘P` (**Switch Monitor Profile**) and pick the profile for the speakers or headphones you are using. A profile whose device is unplugged is grayed out and cannot be picked; plug the device in or pick another. Gain and channel pair: [Monitor Profiles](/mix/monitor-profiles.md).

## Unmute the track, or clear a solo

Select the silent track and press `⇧M` to unmute it. If another track is soloed, select it and press `⇧S` to clear the solo. See [Track Mix](/mix/track-mix.md).

## Load an instrument on the track

An instrument track with no instrument plays nothing, and Musical Typing only plays a track with an instrument loaded. If the instrument card shows a warning, click **Retry** or run **Retry Instrument Load**; see [Plugin Won't Load](/troubleshooting/plugin-wont-load.md).

## More actions

* Raise the device's own volume: **Device Volume** in the profile is a window on the macOS volume.
* On a controller, a black key is silent under the **Drums**, **Scale** and **Follow** layouts: [Play a MIDI Controller](/controllers/play-a-controller.md).
* Check the Master track's fader and the group fader above the track: [Group Mix and Master Mix](/mix/group-and-master-mix.md).

## Good to know

* **A pitched-up Punchy sample gets quieter**, because each slice ends early. Switch the Character to Smooth: [Gaps After Stretching](/troubleshooting/gaps-after-stretching.md).
