# Latency While Playing

> Notes sound late when you play live. Lower the Buffer Size, take plugin latency off your track with Zero Latency Mode, and play through wired headphones.

## Lower the buffer size

Press `⌘,`, choose **Audio** and pick a smaller **Buffer Size**, such as 128 samples. **Buffer Latency** and **Round-trip Latency** drop. Go back to a larger size for big mixes. See [Settings](/work-fast/settings.md).

## Take plugin latency out of the track you play

Press `⌘K`, run **Zero Latency Mode** and pick **Recording & Playing**. Latency-heavy plugins and delay compensation leave the track you play. See [Zero-Latency Monitoring](/record/zero-latency-monitoring.md).

## Play through wired headphones

Pick a profile on wired headphones or your interface with `⌘P`. Wireless headphones add well over 100 ms on the way out.

## Good to know

* **Gridshift compensates recordings for wireless output**, so takes land in time; only what you hear while playing is late.
* **A smaller buffer costs CPU.** If playback crackles, step one size up.
* **If the playhead line and the sound disagree**, set **Playhead Offset** in Settings ▸ Audio; it changes nothing you hear.
