# Groups

> Routes several tracks through one group track, a sub-mix bus with its own effects and mix. Select the tracks and press ⌘G.

## Group tracks

<video src="/videos/sidebar-group.mp4" poster="/videos/sidebar-group.jpg" aria-label="Command G puts the selected tracks in a new group; the left arrow folds it away and the right arrow opens it again" title="Command G puts the selected tracks in a new group; the left arrow folds it away and the right arrow opens it again" muted loop playsInline preload="none" />

Select the tracks and press `⌘G`. They now play through the new group, so a compressor on the group works on all of them together. `←` folds the group away and `→` opens it again.

## Ungroup tracks

Select the group's header and press `⇧⌘G` (**Ungroup Track**). The tracks move up one level and the header disappears.

## Move tracks in and out of a group

Drag a track onto a group's header to add it, or out of the group to remove it. Or select the track, run Command Palette → **Add Track to Group…** and pick the group.

## Give a track its group's color

Right-click a track inside a group and choose **Color** → **Inherit**. The track takes the group's color.

## Good to know

* **A group track is a sub-mix bus.** All child tracks route their audio through it, so its volume, pan, [Mix Controls](/mix/track-mix.md) and effects work on the summed signal.
* **Groups show in the sidebar, not on the timeline.** Only the child tracks show clips. Select the group in the sidebar to reach its Inspector and effects chain.
* **Groups nest with no depth limit.** Grouping tracks that already share a group nests the new group inside it.
* **Balance the children from the group's Inspector.** Its **Group Mix** section has a fader per child: [Group Mix and Master Mix](/mix/group-and-master-mix.md).
* **Output buses and automation tracks can't go into a group.**

> **Details**
>
> * **A new group is named Group**, with the tracks listed beneath it, and its header is selected.
> * **You can also click the chevron on a group's header to fold it.** On a track inside a group, `←` jumps to the group's header.
> * **Group header rows carry M and S**, which mute or solo the whole group.
> * **Inherit appears in the Color menu only when every track you color is in a group.**
> * **Add Track to Group… lists the project's groups** with a checkmark on the current one. With no group in the project it says **No Groups Available**.
