# Quantize

> Moves the start of clips and MIDI notes to the nearest 1/16 grid line. Select what is off the grid and press ⌘U.

## Quantize clips

<video src="/videos/quantize-clips.mp4" poster="/videos/quantize-clips.jpg" aria-label="Command A selects the snare clips, Command U moves each start onto the nearest sixteenth line" title="Command A selects the snare clips, Command U moves each start onto the nearest sixteenth line" muted loop playsInline preload="none" />

Select the clips with `⇧`-click, or press `⌘A` for every clip on the track. Press `⌘U`, and each one jumps to the nearest 1/16 line.

## Quantize MIDI notes

<video src="/videos/quantize-notes.mp4" poster="/videos/quantize-notes.jpg" aria-label="In Focus Mode, Command A marks every note and Command U snaps them to the grid" title="In Focus Mode, Command A marks every note and Command U snaps them to the grid" muted loop playsInline preload="none" />

Open the MIDI clip in [Focus Mode](/edit/focus-mode.md) with `⌥↓`. Mark the notes with `⌘A`, or `⌘→` / `⌘←` one at a time, and press `⌘U`.

## Quantize onto the swung grid

<video src="/videos/quantize-groove.mp4" poster="/videos/quantize-groove.jpg" aria-label="Hats placed on the straight grid jump onto the swung lines with Command U" title="Hats placed on the straight grid jump onto the swung lines with Command U" muted loop playsInline preload="none" />

With a [groove](/timing/groove.md) on, select the hats and press `⌘U`. Each start lands on the swung line, not the straight one.

## Good to know

* **Starts only.** Lengths stay as they are. Where a moved start runs into the next clip or note, the earlier one is shortened to end there.
* **It follows the groove.** Each track uses its own groove when it has one, otherwise the project groove. The stored position stays straight, so it keeps following when you change the groove later.
* **Always 1/16**, whatever grid the zoom level shows.
* **A flam stays a flam.** When two selected clips are nearest the same line, the closer one lands on it and the other keeps its distance.
* **To quantize while you play**, set Record Quantize: [Record MIDI](/record/record-midi.md). To snap the slices inside a loop, use **Quantize** in the Warp section: [Time Stretching](/timing/time-stretching.md).

> **Details**
>
> * **Nothing is deleted from clips.** A shortened [linked copy](/arrange/linked-clips.md) becomes a clip of its own, so the other copies keep their length.
> * **Notes on the same pitch may not overlap.** If shortening would leave a note under 1/64, or two notes land on the same start, one of them is removed. Notes on different pitches may overlap.
> * **Notes change every linked copy**, because they belong to the clip's body.
> * **In Focus Mode with nothing marked**, `⌘U` does nothing. Leave Focus Mode to quantize the clip itself.
> * **Quantize Selection is in the Command Palette's Clips group.** `⌘Z` undoes it as one step, and a [controller](/controllers/controller-profiles.md) button can run it.
