# Pitch and Formant

> Shifts a sample's pitch without changing its speed, and on Smooth moves a voice's formants without changing its pitch. Click Pitch in the Inspector's Warp section and type semitones.

## Shift the pitch

<video src="/videos/time-stretching-pitch.mp4" poster="/videos/time-stretching-pitch.jpg" aria-label="Pitch is set to plus three, and the row shows A beside the shift, the key the hook lands on" title="Pitch is set to plus three, and the row shows A beside the shift, the key the hook lands on" muted loop playsInline preload="none" />

In the Inspector's **Warp** section, click **Pitch** and type a shift in semitones, or drag it. The key the sample lands on shows beside it in gray.

## Follow the project key

Click the link chip beside **Pitch**. The sample moves by the smallest interval to the project key and follows when the key changes.

## Shift the formants

<video src="/videos/time-stretching-formant.mp4" poster="/videos/time-stretching-formant.jpg" aria-label="On the Smooth vocal, pitched up three semitones, the Formant slider is dragged up and then down while the pitch stays at +3" title="On the Smooth vocal, pitched up three semitones, the Formant slider is dragged up and then down while the pitch stays at +3" muted loop playsInline preload="none" />

With the Character on **Smooth**, drag the **Formant** slider under Pitch. Positive values brighten a voice, negative values darken it.

## More actions

* **Reset Pitch:** right-click the value. **Reset Formant:** `⌥`-click the slider.
* **Correct the original key:** edit the **Key** row in the Sample section if the gray key is wrong.

## Good to know

* **Pitch runs from −24 to +24 semitones**, decimals allowed; `⌥`-drag sets cents. You hear it while you drag.
* **Pitch is not linked by default**, so a new sample never transposes itself. The project key is set in [Tempo, Key and Time Signature](/projects/tempo-key-meter.md).
* **Under Punchy, raised pitch leaves gaps.** A slice pitched up plays faster and ends early. For pitched-up melodic material, switch to **Smooth** ([why](/troubleshooting/gaps-after-stretching.md)).
* **Formant is Smooth-only**, from −12 to +12 semitones, shown while the sample is stretched or pitched.
* **Like a stretch, pitch belongs to the sample**, so every clip of it follows.

> **How much does raised pitch cost under Punchy?**
>
> * **At `+12` semitones a slice covers half its span, at `+19` about a third**; the loop sounds choppy and gets noticeably quieter. Pitched down, each slice is cut at the next marker.
> * **Formant takes typed values**: double-click the slider.
