# iPhone: Library

> Browses, auditions and sorts your Sample Library on iPhone or iPad, and every change travels back to the Mac. Open the Samples tab, tap a collection and tap a row to hear it.

## Audition samples

Open the **Samples** tab and tap a collection. Tap a row to hear it, tap it again to stop. Tap the waveform at the bottom to play from that point.

## Sort samples while you listen

Swipe a row left for **Delete**, **Favorite** and **Tag**, or right to file it into the collection you last used. A full swipe does the first action, and the list moves on to the next row and plays it.

## Act on many samples at once

Tap **Select**, pick the rows, and use the bar in the search field's place: Favorite, Collection, Tag, Delete.

## Search samples

Type in the search field on the Samples tab. Tap the filter button beside it to sort by **Name**, **Favorite**, **Length**, **Tempo** or **Added**.

## Edit a sample

Tap **Edit** on the waveform. The editor opens at **Slices**, **Tempo** or **Sampler**. Swipe back to shrink it into the list again.

## Good to know

* **Samples play from a small mono copy**, the whole sample at roughly 1.5 % of its size, never the original. It exists only once **Sync samples** is on on the Mac; see [iCloud](/sync/icloud.md).
* **Four things travel back to the Mac:** the favorite mark, your own tags, the sample's collection, and the Trash. The phone sends only the fields you touched, so it never overwrites what the Mac knows.
* **Deleting destroys nothing.** The sample goes to the Mac's Trash with its file, favorite, tags and collections, and **Put Back** on the Mac restores it for thirty days. There is no confirmation; an **Undo** bar appears instead.
* **Curating works offline.** Every edit is written on the phone first and catches up the next time you open the tab.
* **The editor cuts and shapes only.** **Sample** holds the slice pads with Detect, Tempo and Shape; **Sampler** plays the sample as an instrument with Env, LFO, Loop and Sound.

> **Details**
>
> * The Samples tab mirrors the Mac's library sidebar: **All Samples**, **Unsorted** and your audio collections first, then the same for MIDI patterns under **Patterns**, each with its count.
> * A row shows thumbnail, name, length or beats and notes, tempo and a star for favorites. A sample arrives as a waveform drawing of about 9 KB. The list stands on the selected sample's blurred waveform in its collection's color, and the waveform at the bottom is drawn the way the editor draws it.
> * One preview at a time: starting one stops the last, but never the project bounce playing in the [Projects](/sync/iphone-player.md) tab.
> * Search matches names and tags and stays inside the collection you opened; from the top level it searches the whole library. Detected tags are searchable too: what a file name says, such as **kick** in `Kick_01.wav`, and, with [Smart Search](/library/smart-search.md) on the Mac, what a sample sounds like.
> * **Added** sort puts the newest samples on top.
> * On iOS 26 search and filter sit in the bottom bar, on iOS 18 at the top right.
> * Rows below the fold are fetched ahead, eight of them, three at a time, and dropped once you scroll past. The sample under the waveform and its neighbors are opened ahead of your tap. The phone keeps 256 MB of auditioned audio and discards the least recently played beyond that.
> * **No preview** means the Mac has not made the small copy yet; **Not in iCloud** that the audio never reached iCloud. Turn on **Sync samples** on the Mac. Patterns never carry preview audio and say nothing.
> * The right-swipe label names the collection, so a full swipe is never a surprise. Press and hold a row for the same choices by name, plus **Tags…**, a checklist that adds, removes and renames tags without closing after each one.
> * Detected tags show a sparkle and no check mark. Tap one to keep it as your own tag; remove a detected tag on the Mac.
> * Favoriting does not move on, since marking a sample is often the reason to keep listening. Deleting, filing or tagging the sample under the waveform does.
> * Deletions travel both ways: a sample trashed on the Mac leaves the phone's list too.
> * New sample collections are macOS-only; the phone files into collections that exist.
> * In the editor, the chevrons next to the name step to the previous or next sample, and the list follows. The **ⓘ** shows how the Mac plays the sample on a track (as slices or as an instrument) and the file's format, length and key.
> * Sample curation is not a proposal: it writes the fields you touched straight onto the sample's record, leaving every other field the Mac owns untouched.

> **Sort order**
>
> **Name**, **Favorite**, **Length**, **Tempo**, **Added** (newest first).
