# Reverse Sample

> Plays a sample track’s sample backwards, on every clip of the track. Press ⌘K and run Reverse Sample, or press Reverse in the Sample Editor.

## Reverse a sample

<video src="https://docs.gridshift.studio/videos/reverse-sample-on.mp4" poster="/videos/reverse-sample-on.jpg" aria-label="Command K and Reverse Sample on the drum break: the waveform of every clip on the track flips" title="Command K and Reverse Sample on the drum break: the waveform of every clip on the track flips" muted loop playsInline preload="none" />

Select a clip on the track, press `⌘K` and run **Reverse Sample**, or press `⌥X` and **Reverse** in the [Sample Editor](https://docs.gridshift.studio/samples/sample-editor.md). Every clip on the track now plays backwards.

## Play it forwards again

<video src="https://docs.gridshift.studio/videos/reverse-sample-off.mp4" poster="/videos/reverse-sample-off.jpg" aria-label="Reverse Sample again turns the drum break's waveform the right way round" title="Reverse Sample again turns the drum break's waveform the right way round" muted loop playsInline preload="none" />

Run **Reverse Sample** again, or press **Reverse** again. The sample plays forwards as before; `⌘Z` right after reversing does the same.

## Use the same sound both ways

<video src="https://docs.gridshift.studio/videos/reverse-sample-two-tracks.mp4" poster="/videos/reverse-sample-two-tracks.jpg" aria-label="Two copies of the drum track; Reverse Sample from the Command Palette flips one of them while the other keeps playing forwards" title="Two copies of the drum track; Reverse Sample from the Command Palette flips one of them while the other keeps playing forwards" muted loop playsInline preload="none" />

Run **Duplicate Tracks** (`⌘D` with the track list focused), then **Reverse Sample** on one of the two. Each track keeps its own direction.

## Good to know

* **Reverse belongs to the track’s sample, not to one clip.** Every clip on the track plays backwards, so a sound in both directions needs two tracks.
* **Each clip plays the same part of the sample as before, from the other end.** Clips stay where they are in the song.
* **Picking another sample with `⌥S` keeps Reverse on.** The new sound plays backwards too. The list still previews it forwards.
* **The original file is never changed.** Gridshift plays a reversed copy and saves it with the project.
* **Settings carry over:** Warp, pitch, Normalize and Trim Silence apply to the reversed sound. Slice markers you placed by hand are mirrored.

> **What else should I know?**
>
> * **Reverse works on sample tracks only**, not on a track playing the [built-in sampler](https://docs.gridshift.studio/samples/sampler.md).
> * **A sample with [stems](https://docs.gridshift.studio/samples/stems.md) is reversed as you hear it**, muted stems left out, and loses its stem lanes. Turning Reverse off brings back that mix, not the lanes.
> * **Detected slice markers are found again** on the reversed sound, so slices start on the reversed attacks.
> * **Per-slice levels reset**, as when you pick another sample.

**Next:** [Reverse Reverb](https://docs.gridshift.studio/samples/reverse-reverb.md) builds a swell that rises into a sound.
