# Reverse Reverb

> Builds a reverb swell that rises into a sound instead of trailing away after it, on a new track. Select an audio clip, press ⌘K, run Reverse Reverb… and pick the reverb.

## Create a swell

<video src="/videos/reverse-reverb-run.mp4" poster="/videos/reverse-reverb-run.jpg" aria-label="Command K, typing reverse reverb and Return open the list of what the swell can run through" title="Command K, typing reverse reverb and Return open the list of what the swell can run through" muted loop playsInline preload="none" />

Select the audio clip. Press `⌘K`, type **Reverse Reverb…** and press `Return`. A list opens with everything the swell can run through.

<video src="/videos/reverse-reverb-pick.mp4" poster="/videos/reverse-reverb-pick.jpg" aria-label="Return picks the Built-in Reverb, and a new track above the break holds the swell, peaking on the first hit" title="Return picks the Built-in Reverb, and a new track above the break holds the swell, peaking on the first hit" muted loop playsInline preload="none" />

Press `Return` on **Built-in Reverb**, the first row. A new track above the clip holds the swell, peaking on the first hit.

## Pick the reverb

<video src="/videos/reverse-reverb-hall.mp4" poster="/videos/reverse-reverb-hall.jpg" aria-label="Typing hall filters the list to the Hall return track, and Return renders the swell through its effects" title="Typing hall filters the list to the Hall return track, and Return renders the swell through its effects" muted loop playsInline preload="none" />

In the list, type to filter, for example `hall` for a return track, and press `Return`. The swell renders through that track’s effects.

## Swell several clips or a whole track

<video src="/videos/reverse-reverb-select.mp4" poster="/videos/reverse-reverb-select.jpg" aria-label="Clicking one hook clip and pressing Command A selects every clip on the track" title="Clicking one hook clip and pressing Command A selects every clip on the track" muted loop playsInline preload="none" />

Click one clip and press `⌘A` to select every clip on the track, or select several audio clips.

<video src="/videos/reverse-reverb-render.mp4" poster="/videos/reverse-reverb-render.jpg" aria-label="Return on Hall: a progress sheet counts the clips as they render, and all the swells land on one new track, each peaking on its own phrase" title="Return on Hall: a progress sheet counts the clips as they render, and all the swells land on one new track, each peaking on its own phrase" muted loop playsInline preload="none" />

Run **Reverse Reverb…** and pick the reverb, as for one clip. All the swells land on one new track, each peaking on its own hit.

## Stop a render

Press the cancel button on the progress sheet, or `Escape`. Nothing is added.

## Good to know

* **Use it as a lead-in** before a snare hit, a vocal phrase, a drop or a transition.
* **The original clip is never changed.** The swell is rendered offline from the clip as you hear it, reversed, and placed on a new track so its peak lands exactly on the clip’s first hit. A trimmed clip or a single slice swells into its own hit; a warped or pitched clip is rendered as it plays.
* **The new track sits directly above the clip’s track**, named after the clip with a `⟵` in front, and holds the swell, selected.
* **`⌘Z` removes it in one step** (**Undo Reverse Reverb**). After a multi-clip run, one `⌘Z` removes all the swells.
* **The rise length follows the reverb.** The built-in reverb gives a two-second rise. Through a plugin the swell is as long as the reverb’s tail, up to ten seconds per effect: a long hall gives a long rise, a short room a short one.

> **Details**
>
> * **The swell fades out over 0.2 s after its peak**, so its wet rest blends into the clip.
> * **Reverse Reverb… is in the Audio Tools group.** With no audio clip to work on, the palette shows **No Audio Clip Selected** instead of the list.
> * **To shape the reverb first**, dial it in on a [return track](/mix/sends-and-returns.md), then pick that return track.
> * **Bypassed effects on a return track are skipped.** A return track without an active effect reads **No active effects** and cannot be picked.
> * **A missing plugin is marked (not installed).** Picking it, or any effect that fails to load, shows an error instead of rendering without it.
> * **An effect at 0 % wet adds no reverb**, so Gridshift names it and renders nothing.
> * **Rack presets are not offered.** Their parallel chains cannot be rendered as a single swell.
> * **With no clip selected, every audio clip on the selected tracks is used.** Muted clips are left out. `⌘A` is **Select All Clips in Track**.
> * **A multi-clip run shows a progress sheet** that counts the clips as they render (“Clip 3 of 16”). Each source track gets one new track above it, named `⟵` and the track’s name, with all of that track’s swells on it, and the new swells are selected.
> * **Close clips still each get a full peak.** A swell starts where the one before it ends, so every swell peaks on its own hit.
> * **Some clips get no swell:** one with no room before it, such as a clip at the very start of the song, or a silent one. A banner says how many clips were skipped.
> * **A long run through a plugin chain can take a few seconds.** You can stop it at any time.

> **What the swell runs through**
>
> | Section | What the swell runs through |
> | - | - |
> | **Reverb**: **Built-in Reverb** (default) | A large chamber, no plugin needed |
> | **Return Tracks** | The effects on that return track, with their current settings. Each row lists its effects, e.g. `kHs Filter → kHs Reverb → kHs Chorus` |
> | **Effect Presets** | Any saved [effect preset](/sounds/effect-presets.md): a single plugin or a chain. The row shows the plugin's name, or **Chain** |
