# Record Audio

> Records a microphone, a line input or an audio interface onto an empty sample track. Select a sample track with no sample, press Caps Lock, then Space.

## Record from an input

Select a sample track with no sample loaded. Press `Caps Lock`, then `Space`, and a clip outline grows as audio comes in. Press `Space` to stop and keep the take as a clip.

## Choose the input and set its level

Open `Settings → Audio → Input`, pick the **Input Device** and adjust **Input Gain** until the **Input Level** meter peaks around −12 dBFS. From the Command Palette, **Set Recording Input Gain** sets the same gain.

## Allow microphone access

On first use, macOS asks for Microphone permission. If you declined, turn Gridshift on in `System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone`.

## Good to know

* **Audio recording starts at once, without a count-in.**
* **Only an empty sample track records audio.** If the sample track already has a sample, the same keys record slice triggers instead: [Record MIDI](/record/record-midi.md).
* **[Zero-Latency Monitoring](/record/zero-latency-monitoring.md) does not apply to audio input recording.**
* **To record the sound of another app**, use [App Audio Capture](/record/app-audio-capture.md).
