# Recording

> One record mode records whatever the selected track takes: notes, slices, audio or automation, live or one step at a time. Select the track, press Caps Lock, then Space.

Set the count-in, select the track, press `Caps Lock` for record mode and `Space` to start: Gridshift counts you in and records.

## Turn record mode on

Select the track and press `Caps Lock`. The record button in the transport bar blinks red and the Caps Lock light comes on. Press `Caps Lock` or `Esc` to leave.

## Record live or step by step

With the transport playing, what you play is recorded as it happens. With the transport stopped, each key writes one step at the cursor. Details: [Record MIDI](/record/record-midi.md).

## Know what the track records

The selected track decides. An instrument track records MIDI notes, a sample track with slices records slice triggers, an empty sample track records audio from your input, and any track records [automation](/mix/automation.md) when you move a control.

Played something good with record mode off? Press `⇧C` and it becomes a clip: [MIDI Capture](/record/midi-capture.md).
