# Find Samples

> Finds samples by name, tag, collection or sound, in the ⌥S picker and the library window. Type a word and pick a tag or collection chip to narrow the list.

## Narrow the list

In the `⌥S` picker, type a word and pick a matching collection or tag at the top of the results. It becomes a chip in the search line. Pick it again to invert it, and `⌫` on an empty field takes the last chip off.

## Search the library window

In the library window (`⌘Y`), press `⌘F` and type. `↑` / `↓` walk the results while the caret stays in the field, and `Space` plays the selected row. Click **Filter by Tag** in the toolbar and pick tags to show only the samples that carry every one of them.

## Find similar samples

Right-click a sample in the library window and choose **Find Similar**. From the arrangement, select one audio clip and run Command Palette → **Find Similar Samples**.

## Find duplicates

Open **Duplicates** under **Samples** in the sidebar. Select the copies you do not need and press `⌫`.

## Good to know

* **Chips of the same kind are OR, different kinds are AND.** The older `:` tokens still work, and tokens and chips stack: `kick :short :mono` returns only short, mono kicks.
* **Categories are inferred from the file name.** `808-deep-kick.wav` picks up `drums` and `kick`. Import folders are searched too, but are not tags.
* **Favorites lead the picker's results**, when they match by their own name or tags. See **Picker ranking** below.
* **Find Similar and Duplicates need [Smart Search](/library/smart-search.md).** With it on, both sit under **Samples** in the sidebar, above the collections.
* **For drum replacement, open the picker with nothing typed.** On a snare track, the snares closest in character sit at the top.

> **Details**
>
> * **In the search field only some keys reach the list.** `↑` / `↓`, `⌘F` and `Escape` do. `Space` types a space and `⌘⌫` erases the line. `Escape` stops the preview first, then clears the search.
> * **Search finds a renamed sample by both names**, its own and its file's.
> * **Find Similar lists the 50 nearest samples**, with the sample itself at the top to compare. The list appears under **Samples** as **Like** and the sample's name, and replaces the previous one. Column sorting does not apply, because its order is the answer.
> * **Duplicates are the same recording in different files.** A WAV and its MP3, two exports of one sound, a normalized or trimmed copy. They must sound almost identical and match in length within 50 ms or 2 %, whichever is larger, so variations of one loop from a pack are not listed.

> **Search tokens**
>
> | Token | Filters to |

> | `:short` | Samples ≤ 2 seconds |
> | `:long` | Samples ≥ 10 seconds |
> | `:mono` | Single-channel files |
> | `:stereo` | Two or more channels |
> | `:drums`, `:kick`, `:snare`, `:hat`, `:clap`, `:perc` | Auto-classified drum categories |

> | Signal | Effect |
> | - | - |
> | **Exact / prefix / substring** | Direct filename matches rank highest |
> | **Fuzzy subsequence** | `khs` still finds `kick-hard-snap` |
> | **Folder-name boost** | Matches against the folder names an import recorded, decaying with depth |
> | **Collection match** | Matches the typed query against the collection's name |
> | **Plays As** | Samples you play the way this track needs rank higher |
> | **Favorites** | Favorites lead the list, but only when they match by their own name or tags, not just by the folder they came from |
> | **Type** | Loops or one-shots, whichever fits the track, rank higher: [Tempo, Key and Type](/library/tempo-key-and-type.md) |

> With Smart Search on, sound similarity joins the ranking: [Smart Search](/library/smart-search.md).
