# First Launch

> The first time Gridshift opens, a three-page setup scans your plugins, imports your samples and asks what syncs to iCloud. Click Continue through it, or Skip Setup and change everything later in Settings.

## Walk through the setup

Click **Continue** on each of the three pages: plugins, samples, iCloud. **Skip Setup** closes it at any point; everything it asks is also in [Settings](/work-fast/settings.md).

## Scan your plugins

Click **Scan for Plugins** on the first page. Gridshift finds the Audio Unit instruments and effects installed on your Mac and reports how many of each it found; then click **Continue**.

## Bring in your samples

Click **Import Samples and MIDI Files…** and pick a folder. Gridshift copies its samples and patterns into its own library, and the folders inside become tags. Leave **Smart sample search** ticked to find sounds by description, then click **Continue**.

## Choose what syncs to iCloud

Leave **Sync projects** on to see your projects, their versions and comments in the iPhone and iPad app. Turn on **Sync samples** to upload every sample so your other Macs and the iPhone can play them, then click **Done**.

## Good to know

* **Every choice is the same switch as in Settings.** Change any of them later under `Gridshift → Settings → Library` ([Settings](/work-fast/settings.md)).
* **Skip Setup ends it for good.** `Escape` does the same. A page's choices apply when you move on from it, so skipping leaves the current page and the ones after it as they were.
* **The Smart Search download starts when you click Continue.** It is a one-time 170 MB download that keeps running after the setup closes, and after a quit. See [Smart Search](/library/smart-search.md).
* **Sync samples spends your iCloud storage.** The page says how much your library would upload before you switch it on; a small copy of each sound stays on this Mac. See [iCloud](/sync/icloud.md).
* **Gridshift follows the macOS appearance.** It has no light or dark setting of its own; choose **Light**, **Dark** or **Auto** in `System Settings → Appearance`.

> **Details**
>
> * The setup shows once. A launch that quits halfway through it shows it again; an install that already has scanned plugins never shows it.
> * Settings, tags and collections sync to your other Macs whatever you choose on the third page. The two switches add projects and sample audio.
> * **Sync projects** starts on, **Sync samples** starts off.
> * The third page has a link to the TestFlight invite for Gridshift for iPhone and iPad ([iPhone and iPad](/sync/iphone-player.md)).
> * Crash reports are not asked about here. After a crash, a banner asks, with **Always send**; the same switch is in `Settings → Privacy`.
> * To rescan plugins later, run Command Palette → **Scan All Plugins**, or **Scan for New Plugins** for only the ones installed since.
