# Assistants

> Lets Claude or ChatGPT work in Gridshift for you: build a beat, tidy the tracks, check the mix, sort samples. Say what you want in a chat and watch it happen in the window.

## Ask in a chat

Open Claude or ChatGPT with Gridshift running and say what you want, in musical words: *"Make the kick duck the bass"*, *"Group the drums and color them red"*, *"Is the low end too loud?"*. The assistant reads your project, does the steps one by one and tells you what it changed.

Ask *"In Gridshift, start a new project and build an 8-bar house beat at 124 BPM: kick, snare, hats, a bass line and chords. Then loop it."*

## Watch it happen

Every change lands in the open project while you look at it: tracks appear, clips move, faders slide. Play the song at any time to hear the result.

<video src="/videos/assistants-duck-kick-bass.mp4" poster="/videos/assistants-duck-kick-bass.jpg" aria-label="Asked to make the kick duck the bass, ChatGPT adds ducking to the Reese bass track and Kick Ninja appears in its Ducking section" title="Asked to make the kick duck the bass, ChatGPT adds ducking to the Reese bass track and Kick Ninja appears in its Ducking section" muted loop playsInline preload="none" />

The change shows up in the window as soon as the assistant makes it: here the bass track gains a **Ducking** section.

## Take a change back

Each step the assistant takes in the project is one undo step. Press `⌘Z` to take it back, or ask the assistant to undo what it did.

## Which page do you need

* [Use Cases](/assistants/use-cases.md): six things producers ask for, each with a prompt to start from.
* [What Assistants Can Do](/assistants/capabilities.md): everything an assistant can read and change, and what it asks you first.
* [Connect an Assistant](/assistants/install.md): set up Claude or ChatGPT once, in a minute.

## Good to know

* **Gridshift must be running.** The assistant works on the project open in the window.
* **It works in Claude and in ChatGPT on your Mac.** The web versions of both cannot reach Gridshift.
* **What the assistant reads goes to the AI service you use.** The connection to Gridshift itself stays on your Mac.
