# Ask AI

> Ask AI is a chat in the Command Palette. Press ⇧⌘K, type what you want done to your song, and ChatGPT does it with Gridshift's tools.

## Ask for a change

Press `⇧⌘K`, or press `⌘K` and choose **Ask AI…**. Type what you want, such as *"Duck the bass under the kick"*, and press `Return`. The answer appears in the palette, and each tool it used shows as one line.

## Set it up once

Install the [ChatGPT app for Mac](https://chatgpt.com/download). The first time you open Ask AI, it says what is missing: **Download ChatGPT** if the app is not there, **Sign In…** if you are signed out. The sign-in opens in your browser; come back and the chat is ready.

## Good to know

* **Every change to the project is one undo step.** `⌘Z` takes it back, so those run without asking.
* **What undo cannot reach asks first**: files in the Library, presets and projects on disk, app settings. Click **Allow** or **Don't Allow**.
* **"This" and "the track" mean your selection.** Select a track or clips before you ask.
* **It reaches only Gridshift.** It cannot use the shell, other apps or other tools in your Codex setup.
* **It uses your ChatGPT account.** What you type and what it reads from the song go to OpenAI.

> **How is it different from Connect to ChatGPT?**
>
> * Ask AI runs inside Gridshift: no setup beyond the sign-in.
> * [Connect to ChatGPT…](https://docs.gridshift.studio/assistants/install.md) adds Gridshift to Codex chats in the ChatGPT app instead, where you can also work with other files.
> * Both use the same tools: [What AI Assistants Can Do](https://docs.gridshift.studio/assistants/capabilities.md).

> **What if it does not connect?**
>
> * **ChatGPT is not reachable** shows the reason. Click **Check Again** once the ChatGPT app is installed and signed in.
> * Only ChatGPT answers Ask AI for now.
