# Clip Gain and Normalize

> Sets each clip's own level, before the track fader, straight from the number row. Select clips and press 0 to normalize them, 1–9 for 10 % to 90 % of that peak.

## Normalize and level clips

<video src="/videos/timeline-gain.mp4" poster="/videos/timeline-gain.jpg" aria-label="0 normalizes the selected clip, 5 sets its peak to half of that, and the key left of 1 mutes it" title="0 normalizes the selected clip, 5 sets its peak to half of that, and the key left of 1 mutes it" muted loop playsInline preload="none" />

Select clips and press `0` to bring each one's peak to 0 dBFS. Press `1`–`9` to scale that peak down in 10 % steps. The waveform grows or shrinks with the gain.

## Mute a clip

Select clips and press the key left of `1`: `` ` `` on US keyboards, `^` on German ones. The clip goes silent and keeps its gain. Press any of `1`–`9` or `0` to bring it back at that level.

## Type an exact gain

Select clips, press `⌘K`, run **Set Clip Gain** and type a value from −60 to +24 dB.

## Change the gain of every linked copy

Open the clip in [Focus Mode](/edit/audio-clips.md) with `⌥↓` and drag the gain slider in the focus bar. Every [linked copy](/arrange/linked-clips.md) follows.

## Good to know

* **Each clip is measured against its own peak**, so a mixed selection ends up at matching levels instead of sharing one gain.
* **The number keys unlink the clips they change.** Their copies keep their level. Use the Focus Mode gain slider when a change should reach every copy.
* **Boost is capped at +24 dB**, so very quiet tails are not amplified into walls of noise.
* **With no clip selected, or while recording, the number row plays instead.** It retriggers the last note or slice at the chosen level: [Play with the Keyboard](/work-fast/play-with-the-keyboard.md).
* **Normalize Volume (`⌥N`) is a different thing.** It sets the track fader from playback peaks: [Track Mix](/mix/track-mix.md). Clip normalize measures the source file and works without playing first.

> **Details**
>
> * **MIDI clips take the number as an absolute gain.** Peak normalization has no meaning for velocity.
> * **Time-stretched audio is measured across the source span that actually plays**, not the clip's visual length, so sped-up loops normalize correctly.
> * **Mute is a flag and never touches the gain value.** Repeated presses on the same selection are one undo step.
> * **Set Clip Gain writes the clip's shared gain**, so it reaches linked copies like the slider does. −60 dB is silence.
> * **The gain keys can't be reassigned.** They are read as plain key presses, not as commands, so the Command Palette can't rebind them.
> * **Inside Focus Mode the number keys never change clip gain.** In the piano roll they set note velocity ([Piano Roll](/edit/piano-roll.md)).
> * **`⌃` with the same keys drives the track's clipper instead**, because it needs only a selected track: [Track Mix](/mix/track-mix.md).
> * **To draw levels across many clips or slices**, use [Dynamics Mode](/edit/dynamics-mode.md) (`⌥V`).
